A LEGACY OF FLAVOR IN DOWNTOWN AUSTIN
For over 25 years, Clay Pit has been a nationally acclaimed cornerstone of Downtown Austin, serving exceptional Indian flavors in the historic 170-year-old Bertram Building. Join us to experience our award-winning cuisine.

OUR BEGINNINGS
Rooted in Tradition
Since 1998, Clay Pit has been serving Austin a fresh take on Indian cuisine. Inspired by the tandoor, a traditional clay oven from Northern India, our name reflects the heart of what we do: bringing together time-honored recipes and modern flavors.
Led by Owners, Chef Bali Singh, alongside Chef Navdeep Singh and Kaval Bombra, Clay Pit has always been more than just a restaurant. Our incredible staff, many of whom have been with us for years are the heart of our culture, welcoming guests like family and helping shape the experience that makes Clay Pit special. From warm, freshly baked breads and slow-roasted meats to bold curries and vibrant vegetarian creations, every dish reflects our passion for authenticity and innovation.
In 2009, we expanded our vision by opening Tarka Indian Kitchen, bringing the same commitment to quality and flavor to a new, fast-casual setting. Today, Tarka proudly serves communities across Austin, Houston, and San Antonio.
Housed in one of the last original buildings at Guadalupe and 16th Street, Clay Pit remains both a piece of Austin history and a gathering place where community, culture, and unforgettable flavor come together.

AUSTIN'S CULINARY HEART
For over 25 years, Clay Pit has been a vibrant part of Downtown Austin’s cultural fabric, just steps from the Texas State Capitol and The University of Texas. Regularly honored by the Austin Chronicle’s Best of Austin Restaurants and featured in the Austin Chronicle’s Virginia B. Wood First Plates Hall of Fame.
We’re proud to share our legacy through our sister concept, Tarka Indian Kitchen, launched in 2009 with locations in Austin, Houston, and San Antonio. Host your next gathering in our historic Bertram Building and join our community of flavor.
